About Me
building a personal greenhouse

It has always been a dream of mine to have a greenhouse that I could use to grow my own produce during the winter. I love garden fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupes and a variety of other produce and it made me sad when I had to quit gardening for the season. I decided that it was time for me to invest in having a greenhouse built in my backyard so that I could continue to grow throughout the entire year. Learn all about the selection of the glass and how it needs to be cared for right here on my blog.

How To Measure And Order A Glass Shower Door Kit

Lee Moerman

Glass doors can brighten up a shower area and are a lot easier to keep clean than old fashioned shower curtains. A beginning do-it-yourselfer can usually install a glass shower door during the course of an afternoon. The first step is making sure you take the proper measurements so you can buy a shower door kit that will fit into the space in front of the shower. Here is how to properly measure the opening so you can order a glass shower door that will fit into your bathroom.

Measure Base

The first spot you want to measure is the base. If you intend to install a basic flat shower door without any angles across an opening between two walls, simply measure the distance of the base between the two walls.

Measuring an opening with a 90 degree "V" angle is little different. Start your measurement at the point at the "V" and then down both sides until you get to the wall.

You can also have multiple angled openings. Measure the distance between each angle. You should also draw a chart showing how the angles are laid out on the base. The chart will help the store personnel or glass shower door manufacturer visualize what you are doing if you are going to be ordering a custom-made door.

Measure Ceiling and Door Height

Measure the available space between the base of the shower and the ceiling. Then measure the height you want the shower door unit to be once it's installed.

One thing to remember is that you'll be adding hardware to the top of the frame as you install the shower door, and knowing how much space there is between the top of the frame and the ceiling will help ensure you purchase a glass shower door kit that will allow air to circulate between the gap in the door and the ceiling into the shower area.

Airflow helps to keep the shower area dry after showering. If the shower area doesn't dry well, mold and fungus can grow and it will be harder to keep the shower area clean and smelling fresh.

Purchase Shower Door Kit

Once you have your measurements you are ready to head to a major hardware or local plumbing supply store to purchase a shower glass door kit that will fit into the dimensions of your shower opening.

You can also usually order custom-made kits through the stores to fit your non-standard design, or you can have a kit made by ordering one online through different manufacturer's websites. One company that specializes in custom shower enclosures is Enterprise Glass Co Inc.
